I have been asked in the past where I get my inspiration. The answer is everywhere! From going for long walks listening to my iPod, to people watching in a coffee shop. You’d be surprised how quickly you pick up on other people’s idiosyncrasies. I feel it’s important to give characters little habits to make them real – whether it’s running a hand through their hair when uncomfortable or biting their lip when unsure.
None of my characters are based on people I know, or have known in the past. You can have so much fun building a person’s personality and their psyche. When a character hints at a reason for their choices, we understand them better. Peel away those layers people!
Sometimes, even a conversation I have with someone can find its way into one of my books. I’d think ‘that is so something a specific character would say’ and note it down. Never go anywhere without that all-important notebook! Or maybe your phone has an app for note taking, which I’ve found kinda handy lately.
Music is fantastic inspiration! I can picture certain events, emotional conversations or huge plot twists revealed to specific songs. When I have published Witch Hunt I shall share a list of music I linked particular moments to. Keep an eye on my blog.
I’d like to know where you get your inspiration. Maybe you have a funny story behind a specific idea you’ve had? Do comment below, as I’d love to hear from you.
